This one goes out to the Pidgeon - Glenn 'Pidgeon' McGrath, in his final ODI in Australia! After a humiliating whitewash in the Ashes and an ordinary CB series so far, England was staging a remarkable comeback from out of nowhere beating New Zealand to enter into the CB Series finals and beating Australia in the first finals. Pidgey is still unsure whether it will be his last match in Australia beacause an Aussie win here will propel it into the third finals in Adelaide. But nevertheless, it will be his last match infront of his home crowd.
Ponting hands the ball to McGrath, for the final over of the England innings. And the cauldron - Sydney Cricket Gorund - erupts. The noise is unmatchable. Two singles and three twos yield from the first five balls. Finally, as McGrath started the stride for what would be his last ball in Australia, I saw something incredible. All the Australian fans, the England fans, the Barmy Army, literally the whole of SCG stood up, as a token of respect for their child, perhaps Australia's and the world's most successful fast bowler.
And as if already written by fate, Paul Nixon skied the full toss straight to Brad Hodge at deep square leg. What a way to end a career. Repaying all your fans' respect with a wicket of your last ball in front of them! Truly a legend! Take a bow Glenn Donald McGrath!
