For me he is numero uno.
The list reads ...
23 - Brian Lara
24 - Kevin Pietersen
25 - Shivnarine Chanderpaul
26 - Sachin Tendulkar
27 - Wally Hammond
We all thought Sachin was the best and now?? ICC has a list which contains 25 players ranked better than the little master Sachin Tendulkar. Cricket's governing body is in for heavy criticism not only from Indians for not having their hero in the top-5, but also from the cricket fans round the world.
Only god knows on what basis was this ranking-list generated. I say this because out of the top 25, there are at least 10 players, who are virtually unknown even to the most ardent fan. Here's the link to the list. http://www.iccreliancerankings.com/alltime/test/. While you are at it, keep a count of the number of players, who are unheard of by you. I am sure your hands would prove insufficient.
None of us have seen Sir Donald Bradman play. But from what we have heard of him and from what we can see from his statistics, it is taken for granted that he has to lead such a list. And I don't mind Sir Len Hutton and Sir Jack Hobbs following him. But then what has Ricky Ponting got to do at No.4. Punter may have lead Australia to many victories in the recent past. He may also be Australia's best contemporary batsman. But then in a list of all-time greats, there are plenty more people fit enough to be above him, including Sachin himself.
Have any of you heard of Peter May, Dudley Nourse, George Headly etc? Even after being an agog follower of the game for over a decade I have not the faintest idea of who they are. And they end up being better than Tendulkar.
And how does the ICC justify the presence of Sangakkara, Hayden, Kallis and Yousuf in the top 10? For a fact, Sangakkara has not played even half the number of matches that Sachin Tendulkar has and has less than half the number of his centuries. So much for experience. Duh!!
Is 20 years of experience too young?? Is 41 test centuries too few?? Is 150 test matches too less?? Is an average of above 50 so low?? Well if there's anyone out there who has the slightest doubt in answering the above questions, then there's no point arguing.
I think ICC should justify their list immediately or reorder it in the right manner. What is the criteria of such a list?? Statistics?? Runs?? Average?? Experience?? You name it and Tendulkar has them all. He deserves to be in the top 10 of the all-time greatest test players.
After all this being said about the test ratings, Sachin is ranked just 12th in the all-time odi ratings. If you ask me, there is no other player who has influenced one-day cricket as much as Tendulkar has. For me he is numero uno.
