All Roads lead to Attukal Temple for Pongala

Attukal Temple is known as the Sabarimala for women. How rightly so! The mother of all festivals - Attukal Ponagala is the festival with the largest number of Women participants in the World. An achievement to be proud of.

The Attukal Pongala is an annual celebration which marks the culmination of a week long festival at the Attukal Bhagavati Temple. Ladies from various parts of India and now even abroad come to the capital city of God's Own Country, Trivandum, to prepare pongala(porridge). All roads in the city are crowded by lakhs of women. Bearing the scorching sun, these devotees offer their preparations to god almighty.

The festival usually falls in February-March. As is believed, a couple of days before pongala, the heavens open up and shower rain to clean the place for the women to prepare pongala. And mind you this is no superstition, as it has rained on all the pongala eves. Prior to the pongala, the roadsides are full of pot and brick shops. Devotees throng roads and traffic is in chaos in the city. Plenty of security personnel are employed to ensure smooth and safe proceedings. But while worshiping, who wants to create problem?

In 2001, Attukal Pongala entered the Guiness Book of Records for any event or function with the maximum number of women participants. Hail all the women! May Attukal Bhagavati bless all!
