Back with a Bang!

You may wonder about the title, as to who is back with a bang (Hope you did wonder!). Well the answers are me as well Roger Federer :).

Its been a long time since I blogged. In fact its been a long time that I have even visited blogspot :(. But anyway don't worry, be happy that I am back :D. Only after I logged in did I realise, that I had a bunch of drafts which I had left unfinished some time back. Now got to complete all that. Anyway now that it is vacation for me and am literally completely jobless, it is going to be an easy task for me. Usually cricket is my favourite topic. But this time around another sport brings me back courtesy its emperor, the one and only - Roger Federer.

By winning the French Open 2009 at Rolland Garros, Roger Federer, won his first ever Grand Slam on clay by beating Robin Soderling. More importantly he won his 14th Grand Slam title, equalling Pete Sampras's world record. Incidentally, the American does not have a French Open feather on his cap. Federer also became the sixth player in history and the first since Andre Agassi to win all four Grand Slams - a Career Grand Slam.

Though I am not an ardent fan of Tennis as a sport, I adore Roger Federer. With a record five Wimbledon titles to his credit, he is to tennis, what Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket. Truly a legend! His sixth Wimbledon final, with arch rival Rafael Nadal, in 2008 is arguably regarded as the best match in history. Though Federer lost his first Wimbledon final, his comeback was tremendous.

Needing just 7 years to complete 14 Grand Slams (compared to Sampras' 12), Federer's emotions came out as tears after he won the French Open. I am sure there would have been tears in the eyes of every Federer fan as well. All Nadal fans and critics were silenced as Federer once again climbed to the top of the world. It would have appropriate if the win had come against Nadal himself in the finals but he was already eliminated.

Come this June last week and Federer is on the hunt for his sixth Wimbledon title and his record breaking 15th Grand Slam title. His task is made easy by defending champion Nadal, pulling out of the tournament with an injury. As of now, a fantastic fortnight in Paris has not only taken Federer to the very summit but also, more importantly, it might have put an end to the long-running debate about who is the greatest player of all time.

The Fed stands alone. Truly alone, as only a handful of athletes in sport get to be.
