Roger Federer - The Gladiator

Truly a Legend

"Sorry Pete! I tried my best, but couldn't stop him" - said an emotional Andy Roddick after his epic Wimbledon final against Roger Federer. Indeed he was referring to Federer's 15th Grand Slam title, thus eclipsing Pete Sampras' 14, to take him to the top of the list. Roger Federer had beaten Andy Roddick 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14.

After winning the semifinal, when asked whom he preferred to play in the final, local favorite Andy Murray or old rival Andy Roddick, an emphatic Federer replied it really didn't matter! But he was almost wrong when Roddick gave him a hell of a time in the finals especially with his 'body line' serves. Roddick looked like a man on a mission, when he won the first set and took an impressive 6-2 lead in the second set tie-breaker. But Federer staged an impressive comeback winning the tie-breaker 8-6 and also winning the next set. But things got tense when the match came down to the last set and to win, one had to break the other's serve. Coincidentally, Federer had failed to break even one of Roddick's serves. The match ceased to end and the clock indicated more than 4 hours of play. But a small lapse in concentration by Roddick enabled Federer to get his first break-point of the match and with that the title.

On the day, he regained his world No 1 spot, once stolen from him by Rafael Nadal and also got back the prize which had evaded him for the first time since he started winning it way back in 2003. But alas what gift can you give the man who has won everything? The good burghers of the All England Club evidently felt that, apart from carrying off a winner's cheque for £850,000 and the Challenge Cup for the sixth time, Roger Federer merited an even more unusual souvenir to mark his historic record 15th grand slam triumph at Wimbledon. And so the Club took down the Centre Court net, folded it up and offered to him as a memento of his monumental win.

On Sunday, the world saw tennis being conquered by its greatest player ever. He came! He saw! He conquered! That says it all about Roger Federer.
